about

Hijacked Records Detroit starts off 2015 with a killer release for you! For those of you who pledged your allegiance to Detroit Techno in its earlier years, you may remember the iconic Deep Space Radio Show out of Detroit. For this release we bring you four tracks from amazing artists out of both Detroit and Toronto, each with an incredible interpretation of an original track paying tribute to a time remembered fondly by many of us.

We open with the title track, an original mix from Antwon Faulkner. Antwon’s track is high energy with a deep and super funky bassline. With lots of highs and beautifully haunting sounding synths, Antwon makes this track interesting and different from anything he’s made before by building the melody from what sounds like horns from space. He also totally flips the script on this one. Listen to the breakdown, at the 04:11 minute mark, he completely changes up the melody, accenting on the opposite keys. This creates some real depth in this track. No pun intended.

Next up is a remix from a couple of really talented brothers from Toronto, Matt & Mark Thibideau. If you don’t know these guys, drop everything and look them up now! “Deep Space – Toronto/Detroit Remix” pulls you in immediately with a deep and full sounding bassline. By 30 seconds they start teasing you with rich chords and the voice drop from the original radio show. This track is beautifully constructed with game changing moments at 02:48 and 04:50. These guys are masters at what they do and it comes through in their synth work. I could cry.

We are blessed to then present you a remix from DJ 3000 of Motech Records. True to Franki’s style this track is hard and heavy from the get! Using the original melody and synths, it’s really interesting to see another totally funky track arranged completely differently. This track is upbeat with a bassline that won’t quit!

And rounding out this release, our last track is a remix from another Toronto native and longtime friend of Hijacked’s, Greg Gow of Restructured Recordings. Again we get to hear another incredible artist make different choices using some of the original parts, in this case, the synths. Greg builds his mix on a hard clap and high hat that get any technohead moving. Greg takes an almost acid approach, with sharp, intentional keys less on the twangy side, more of the old Detroit shit! This track is bangin’!

Each track on this ep is a killer on its own. This is the kind of release where you just grab the whole thing. It’s impressive how different each mix is, then again, these are some really impressive artists! More to come, we’re on a roll!
